Remember when...

I have emphasized in these paintings a right-brained, childlike view of early life experiences and rites of passage. The series validates childhood as a time of spirituality, sexuality, and humor which precedes adult "shoulds" and "oughts." The child is sexual without moral judgment and religious without theological concern. My Childhood Memories series covers such topics as sibling rivalry, bathroom intrigue, questions of self-image and sexual discovery. |

There is a trend in current psychological theory to emphasize the dysfunctional family, the tragic and painful events of one's childhood. I prefer instead a humanistic approach which asks what makes a person happy, enriched, and fulfilled. This series is joyous and primal; a celebration of the irreverence and exuberance of the child in each of us. |
![]() Childhood Memory Series Remember when...Masticate or masturbate and pay attention in class 500 times on the blackboard 66" x 66" I have chosen to represent these ideas through the form of abstract and primitive expressionism. This allows a pictorial richness and bold style which convey the theme of childhood perceptions and passions. |
In creating this series I've been influenced by many sources, particularly the early COBRA painters, German Expressionists, children's art, and the art of mentally handicapped people. |
|
The Abstract Expressionist art style distorts images to disturb the psyche and create emotional impact. Commonly this form is used to express pathos and the plight of the human condition. |
|
ln these paintings I'm using its exaggerated color and spontaneous forms to evoke human puzzlement and other right-brained emotions. I hope to stimulate the viewer's imagination and exploration of one's own memories. |
By awaking our inner child, we can tap into powerful unconscious energies. |
We can laugh at the human predicament, let imagination run wild and be a playful kid again. We can explore early rituals - those rites of passage which for so long have been forgotten. Our innocence and subsequent loss of innocence can remind us of our personal voyage In the magical realm of childhood. |
